Chapter 13: You Idiot...

Nearly three days prior…

Cool, dry air brushed across Amy’s face as she lay on the cold, rough wooden floorboards of the cage cart. Her hands and feet were bound tightly to prevent her movements. She lay motionless on the floor of the cart, which was driven by a now-human Oswald. It moved gracefully as it was pulled across the moonlit desert by two slate grey mules. Below it sat two wide skis which glided smoothly across the shifting sands. Suddenly, the ski on the left side passed over a large stone jutting out of the sand, which caused the whole cart to sway. This sudden jolt woke Amy as her head bounced off the hard wooden boards.

“Ughhhh…” She groaned as pain washed over her entire body. Opening her eyes, she could see large jagged pillars of stone in the distance illuminated by the light of the full moon overhead as they strode onward. What’s going on? Where am I?

She looked around the cart just to see an unconscious Michelle lying beaten and covered in blood in the far corner. “Michelle…” Her voice was stifled by the pain in her chest and the dryness of her throat. She struggled as she found her hands bound behind her back and feet tied tightly together.

“Finally awake, I see.” An odd raspy voice came from the front of the cart.

Rolling her head in the opposite direction, she could see Oswald’s back facing them. “You, you killed her.” She groaned.

“Oh, calm down; she isn’t any use to us dead.” He replied coldly. “That’s not even her blood.”

“Then whose?” It took everything she had to speak even this much.

“I would assume that's from your little boyfriend. I didn’t exactly have a free hand when he charged into that alley, but that one made a competent enough fly swatter.” He remarked.

She didn’t even have the energy to rebuff the boyfriend comment. “Sai?”

“He’s most assuredly dead. You should have heard the snapping noises his bones made, like tree branches in a hurricane. But don’t worry.” He continued. “I gave her a potion immediately as we crossed the portal. So, she’s sustained very minor injuries.” He was so callous when he spoke; it almost made Alister’s condescension sound downright charming.

“You’re a monster. You’re gonna regret this.” She struggled as she tried to reach for the tome holster on her hip. Only to realize the book wasn’t there.

“Sorry, sweetheart, I’m not the monster in this story. Nah, we left him in the alley.” He glanced back at her for only a second. “You think I’d be stupid enough to let you keep your tome?” He laughed at how preposterous it sounded. “Don’t worry; I’ve got both of them right here.” He reached into a burlap sack in between his feet and pulled out both books. He held them up, so they were easily visible.

Amy suddenly became aware of how dire their situation actually was.

“You caused quite the fuss back there in town. Not to mention the number you did on Roark back in Dione.
